Breast augmentation

Breast augmentation

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that consists of placing breast prostheses in order to beautify the breast.

It can be performed to correct a slight breast ptosis or sagging due to weight loss or consecutive pregnancies or breastfeeding.

How is the breast augmentation procedure performed?

During the first consultation with the surgeon, he or she will ask the patient about her medical and surgical history to avoid any contraindications such as bleeding disorders and heart problems.

Then, the attending physician will examine the patient’s silhouette, her size, the shape and positioning of her breasts. If he notices the existence of an asymmetry, he will ask for it because there is a great risk of it being noticed more as soon as the prostheses are placed.

The tone and thickness of the skin are important to check because they will determine the choice of implants. If the patient has a less toned skin quality, she should not choose heavy or large implants.

The doctor will explain which type of implant is most suitable for the patient and will choose the access route according to certain morphological criteria. He will also specify where the prosthesis will be placed, in front of the pectoral muscle or behind it, i.e. retro-muscular. This decision is made according to several criteria such as thinness and skin quality.

The surgeon will prescribe to the patient examinations and controls to be done before the operation such as ultrasound and mammography, and will quote precautions to be taken into account so that the operation passes in good conditions.

What are the different breast implants ?

There are several models of prostheses for the same desired result, it is up to the surgeon to choose in agreement with the patient:

  • Implants filled with a hard silicone gel, they are the most used because they lead to a natural result to the sight and touch
  • Round prostheses that are shaped like a breast, they are more used in women with small breasts.
  • The texture of the silicone shell
  • The projection
  • etc.

When can I see the final result of the breast augmentation?

After surgery, the breasts are swollen, but it takes 3 to 6 months to see the final result of the operation, and a year for healing.
